The Blurry Lines of Plagiarism, Learning, and Originality

October 10th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

I suspect strongly that Dan Kennedy studied Jeffrey Lant, and that Lant studied Melvin Powers, and that Powers studied John Caples and Hopkins, and back it goes, past Lincoln, Jefferson, and Franklin, at least as far as the Biblical Abraham, who used his marketing skills to persuade God not to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if he could find ten righteous people.

10 Ways to Make Your Message Resonate with Green Consumers: Read My Article #blogboost

August 26th, 2010 · Comments Off · Marketing Techniques and Philosophies, Uncategorized, Web 2.0/Social Media

My latest article, 10 Ways to Make Your Message Resonate with Green Consumers, was published today on GreenBiz.com (Joel Makower’s very well-regarded enviro site). For anyone into Green marketing, I recommend this. (Of course, my book, Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green, goes into far more detail.) Creating original articles is one among several marketing and visibility [...]

Dilbert’s Scott Adams Builds a Green Home #blogboost

August 23rd, 2010 · 1 Comment · Energy & Sustainability, Shel's Personal Life, Uncategorized

If you think we in the Green movement tend to take ourselves waaaay too seriously, here’s a bit of comic relief. Dilbert creator Scott Adams describes with excruciating humor all the missteps in building a Green home. I can relate. In my own Greener home adventures, we’ve discovered… Solar panels without hinges cost A LOT [...]

A Concentrated Dose of Marcia Yudkin, Marketing Genius–Plus Other Goodies (#blogboost )

August 20th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Marketing Techniques and Philosophies, Marketing Trends/News, Uncategorized

Marcia Yudkin’s weekly Marketing Minute and occasional Name Tales (product and company naming stories) have been brightening my e-mail box all the way back to 1998. She was one of the first people with a folder in my Marketing Geniuses file, where I keep many of her back issues. And she’s one of a very few newsletter publishers who continue to provide value to me many years after I subscribed. (My typical tenure as a subscriber is somewhere between six months and two years).

The point I’m making is that Marcia is someone well worth paying attention to.

Crucial Lessons from the BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster

July 29th, 2010 · 2 Comments · Business Ethics, Energy & Sustainability, Uncategorized

All deep-sea offshore drilling needs to be shut down until the appropriate safety measures are in place so that Deepwater Horizon is not repeated. It’s a lot harder to put the genie back in the bottle than to keep it in to begin with.

See You In Mid-July

July 1st, 2010 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

I don’t expect to be posting much for the next two weeks, as I’ll be out of the country. I do have one guest post in hand that I’ll schedule, and I’m hoping to get one or two more before I actually leave. Let me just take a moment to say thanks for reading, and [...]

Ethics Considerations for Membership in a Green Marketers Association, Part 1: Accomplishments

June 26th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Business Ethics, Energy & Sustainability, International Association of Green Marketers, Uncategorized

Membership in the International Association of Eco-Conscious Marketers will not be open to anyone who claims to be Green. To provide value in the membership, members need to pass both accomplishment-based standards (employment, education/training, and/or volunteer work) and behavioral screens. We’ll talk about accomplishments today, and screens tomorrow

Here are some I’m thinking about:

Is SRI in Africa About to Come of Age?

June 21st, 2010 · 2 Comments · Business Ethics, Democracy, Ethics in Government, Peace and War, Social and Economic Justice, Socially Responsible Investing, Uncategorized

Worldwide, SRI now accounts for 1 of every 9 dollars invested. However, even though Africa was a pioneer in this field (not just with the Sullivan Principles but also the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s first-in-the-world SRI index), it has lagged—but rapid growth appears to be imminent.

A 2-1/2 Year-Old Encounters the iPad

April 10th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

I was in my 20s the first time I ever saw a personal computer, and 27 before I had one of my own. That was three years before my older child was born. My kids grew up with computers. Now comes a generation that will grow up with personal devices. They may never use a [...]

Is It Time for the “Elm Street Economy?”

January 5th, 2010 · Comments Off · Abundance and Prosperity, Energy & Sustainability, People Helping People, Uncategorized

It must have been somewhere around 1986, in the early days of my business, that I first encountered the work of Paul and Sarah Edwards, gurus to the home-based business sector that was just beginning to take off back then. I’ve been home-based since I founded my company in 1981, so their message resonated. I’ve [...]
